EL CAMINO REAL

A collection of documentary photos

Independent project

Support from: Santa Fe Art Institute

This ongoing project explores the El Camino Real, a traditional migration and trade route from Mexico City to Santa Fe, New Mexico. The 1200 mile road was created in the 16th century to facilitate commerce and aid Spanish conquest of the continent. Blazed atop ancient trails that connected pre-contact cultures for thousands of years, the Camino traces the Rio Grande and other waterways. Through travel, study and photography, this project bears witness to the contemporary people and places encountered along this historic route and seeks to understand the social and cultural dynamics of a changing region.

“Traveling through the desert, I met people and photographed landscapes. I was forced to look at my own role in the class structure made up of land claims, water rights, borders both real and imaginary, migration, race, wealth and privilege."
